Your 2.5-hour tour begins at our centrally located office where you will meet your English-speaking local guide and driver. Our first stop is the famed Pantheon, the best-preserved ancient Roman building in the world. This 1st-century Roman temple still holds the record for having the largest, unreinforced dome anywhere on earth
We then head off to the opulent Trevi Fountain to learn about its history, symbols, and the correct way to make a wish while you toss in a coin…or three
The neighbourhood of the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Popolo with its 3,200 year old Egyptian obelisk
The more you move throughout, the more you'll grasp the layers of Rome's buildings, one upon the other, which create the form of the modern city. You'll see Piazza Navona, a baroque showcase of art by Bernini and Borromini, which is also an ancient, 1st-century stadium where athletic competitions were held. Likewise, Castel Sant'Angelo, which you'll also see, was built as a mausoleum for the emperor Hadrian but was later converted into a fortress, prison, and even a residence for the popes
Down the road, we'll stop for a refreshing gelato break at a delicious Roman gelateria!
Finally, we'll drive through Piazza Venezia with its grand Victor Emmanuel II monument and end at Rome's most iconic site, the Colosseum. The Colosseum, or Flavian Amphitheatre as it's officially called, was built in the 1st century A.D. It hosted games such as gladiator combat and animal fights, drawing crowds of more than 50,000 spectators. In antiquity, the poet Martial deemed it the 8th wonder of the world and its allure continues. It draws more visitors than any other Italian monument.
