Originally built under the will of Cordobese Caliph Abderramán III. It was then extended and modified by both Muslim and Christian kings; among these last ones, Peter I commissioned the construction of his palace, which is a perfect example of Mudéjar architecture, unique and recognised in the world. The Catholic Kings, Fernando and Isabel, left their own signatures with some impressive examples of Renaissance style and later in time, Charles V, with amazing Baroque influences.
Despite the fascinating courtyards, the royal bedrooms and the astonishing galleries, its gardens are the most spectacular treasure that the Alcázar has to offer to its visitors. Originally conceived as orchards for the benefit of the Muslim kings, the gardens were successively reformed during the Renaissance, turning them into Greco-Roman style gardens. At the end of XIX and beginning of XX centuries, a touch of British and French Romantic style was then added to the whole area, giving it a unique and well-blended architectural mix. These Gardens also hide countless secrets, tales and love stories between kings and queens, and princes and princesses.
