Overview
Rio Lagartos is a charming fishing town located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula about two hours and forty five minutes from Tulum by car. An area of about 150,000 acres (60,000 hectares) was declared a Biosphere Reserve under the UNESCO program Man and Biosphere in 1999. Different aquatic ecosystems are of great importance to over 280 aquatic bird species (migratory and resident) for their nourishment and reproduction. One such species is the striking American Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber which can be admired in this reserve any time of the year. The semi-deciduous and deciduous lowland jungle of the area are home to a great bird diversity including the endemic Yucatan Nightjar and the very localized Yucatan Wren as well as the quasi-endemic Black-throated Bobwhite and the very beautiful Mexican Sheartail hummingbird. Other species of interest for the area are: Boat billed Heron, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Grey, Roadside, Zone-tailed, White tailed, Common Black and Crane Hawk, Crested Caracara, Lesser Yellow headed Vulture, Ruddy Crake, Lesser Roadrunner, Pygmy Kingfisher, Mangrove Swallow and many more.

About your host
Mexico Kan ToursSustainability is important to us. We have a zero waste programme: we do not use plastics in our tours - instead, we use refillable water bottles and bring homemade snacks in Tupperware boxes. We also have a recycling and composting programme. We select small, locally owned providers (Cenotes, Sian Kaan, food, restaurants, accommodation) to support local communities, and our team participates in beach/town clean-ups each year We financially support local organisations such as Movida Maya (empowering Mayan kids), Alma Animal (shelter for cats and dogs) and a local kids’ football team (Titanes).
For every trip booked, Kodama Travel donates £1 to Just One Tree to restore our forests and the ocean.
